A Night of Violence in Beauvais
On the evening of August 14, 2025, chaos broke out outside an apartment building in Beauvais. Witnesses saw a woman lying unconscious in the recovery position while neighbors tried to assist her. Her husband, arriving home intoxicated, reacted with rage instead of concern.
The man, in his forties and already known to authorities, attempted to fetch a knife. Police intervened quickly, but he lashed out—shoving a female officer and hurling insults at others. According to officers, he shouted that he “wanted to hurt someone.”
The Cat Attacked in Custody
The situation worsened after the suspect was taken to the hospital and then placed in custody at the Beauvais police station. Still furious, he suddenly turned his aggression toward an innocent bystander: the commissariat cat, affectionately named “Police.”
Without provocation, the man kicked the cat violently in the stomach. The force sent the feline flying several meters before crashing against a window pane. Officers rushed to help their four-legged colleague.
Thankfully, “Police” was quickly treated by a veterinarian. With pain relief and care, the cat has since recovered from his ordeal.
“Police”: A Beloved Member of the Force
“Police” has been part of the Beauvais commissariat for over ten years. Originally abandoned, he was adopted unofficially by officers who provided him with food and shelter. Since then, he has roamed the halls freely, offering comfort and companionship to staff and visitors alike.
“Many police stations in France have cats,” one officer explained. “He just stayed with us after we found him, and now he’s part of the team.”
A Heavy Sentence for a Repeat Offender
The assailant, who already had a criminal record—including a conviction for gang rape in 2018—was sentenced on Monday, August 18, 2025, to 15 months in prison, six of which are suspended.
In addition, he must pay €1,550 in damages to the victims, including compensation for the injured cat.
While justice has been served, the shocking attack has sparked widespread anger, particularly among animal lovers, who consider the assault on “Police” as especially cruel.
