Trapped for Months in a Cage on a Balcony, Niko the Dog Is Finally Rescued

For months, Niko the dog endured freezing winters and scorching summers locked in a tiny cage on a balcony in Verona, Italy. Thanks to vigilant citizens and the tireless efforts of animal welfare volunteers, he is finally free—alongside two neglected cats rescued from the same home.

A Life Without Dignity: Niko’s Story

Niko’s nightmare began in silence. Confined for months—possibly years—to a cramped cage or tethered to a short rope on a balcony, he was denied even the simplest freedoms. He couldn’t lie down comfortably, take a single walk, or feel the warmth of companionship. Instead, he endured brutal heatwaves and bitter cold, day and night, utterly alone.

This was not just negligence. It was cruelty, plain and simple.

Citizens Speak Out, Volunteers Take Action

Concerned residents couldn’t ignore what they saw. They alerted LAV (Lega AntiVivisezione), one of Italy’s leading animal protection organizations, sending in photos and videos that documented Niko’s heartbreaking conditions. “Day and night, exposed to the cold of winter and the scorching summer heat,” the organization confirmed in a statement.

These reports sparked a long period of surveillance and evidence collection by LAV’s Verona chapter. Volunteers worked diligently to build a case for intervention—one that would ultimately uncover even more suffering inside the apartment.

Not Just One Victim: Two Neglected Cats Discovered

When authorities finally entered the home, they found that Niko wasn’t alone. Two cats, one male and one female—both unsterilized and clearly neglected—were also living in the same unhealthy environment.

With support from Verona’s Animal Welfare Commissioner, lawyer Emanuela Pasetto, LAV filed a formal complaint with the prosecutor’s office. The evidence gathered led to immediate action: the seizure of all three animals and their placement under LAV’s legal protection.

The Fight for Justice Begins

LAV isn’t stopping at rescue. They’re demanding justice. “We will do everything possible to obtain permanent custody of Niko and the cats,” said lawyer Annarita D’Errico, national coordinator of LAV’s legal aid services.

She emphasized the group’s intent to seek criminal prosecution and confirmed that LAV will act as a civil party in any upcoming trial. “The person responsible for this cruelty must answer for it in court,” she stated firmly.

A New Chapter for Niko—And a Message of Hope

For now, Niko and his feline companions are safe. But their story is far from over. “This case is yet another reminder of how urgent it is to strengthen legal protections for animals,” said Lorenza Zanaboni, head of LAV Verona. “It also shows the power of active citizens and local institutions in fighting cruelty.”

Niko’s suffering may never be forgotten—but thanks to the compassion of strangers, his future is filled with promise. His rescue is proof that fighting for animals is always worth it.
