A Horrific Discovery in the Forest of Ottange
On Wednesday, November 5, 2025, a forest ranger made a grim discovery deep in the woods near Ottange, in the Moselle region of Lorraine, France. Hidden among the trees was a trash bag containing the lifeless body of a dog.
“It’s a scene that’s hard to describe—an unthinkable and profoundly shameful act,” the SPA (Société Protectrice des Animaux) of Thionville wrote in a Facebook post condemning the cruelty.
The ranger immediately alerted local authorities and transported the animal to the Thionville shelter.
The Dog Was Not Identified
Upon examination, the shelter confirmed that the dog had no microchip, making it impossible to identify the owner or retrace the animal’s history.
“We have no way of knowing who the owner is,” the SPA said. “But we sincerely thank the forest ranger for his vigilance and his sense of duty. Thanks to him, this tragedy has not gone unnoticed.”
The association hopes that by sharing the story publicly, someone may recognize the dog or provide information that could help trace those responsible.
A Growing Problem of Animal Abandonment
This shocking discovery comes amid a troubling rise in animal neglect and abandonment cases across France. Every summer, the SPA reports thousands of pets dumped, left to die, or subjected to cruel treatment.
Many shelters in the Lorraine region are at full capacity, and volunteers have repeatedly called for tougher penalties for acts of animal cruelty, as well as stricter identification requirements.
The Call for Justice and Witnesses
The Thionville SPA is appealing to the public for any leads regarding the incident in Ottange. Anyone with information is urged to contact the association directly via Facebook or in person at the shelter.
As the post concludes: “We owe it to this dog to speak up. Silence allows cruelty to thrive.”
