Starved for 20 Days: Man Convicted of Animal Cruelty After Dog Found Severely Emaciated
In a deeply disturbing case of neglect, a 23-year-old man from Beauvais has been sentenced after his dog was found on the brink of death. The American Bully, named Harès, was reportedly deprived of food for nearly three weeks. The court ruled for a lifetime ban on animal ownership and restitution to the SPA.

A horrifying case of neglect
In December 2023, a young man from Beauvais walked into a veterinary clinic with his American Bully, Hares. The vet was shocked: the dog was emaciated, close to death, and clearly had not been fed in weeks. Authorities were immediately alerted, and the SPA (France’s animal protection society) stepped in.
The vet sounded the alarm
The veterinarian’s report concluded the dog hadn’t eaten in at least 20 days. Hares was severely dehydrated and had to be hospitalized with IV fluids for a month. “He was just skin and bones,” the vet stated. The SPA was called in to take over care.
A chilling discovery at home
A police search of the owner's home in the Argentine neighborhood uncovered more horror. Locked in the basement without food, water, or light were other animals: gerbils, a parrot, a rabbit, chinchillas, and a cat. Several of them did not survive.
Hares found a new home — but not all were so lucky
Hares and some of the surviving animals were placed in foster homes while awaiting trial. Tragically, the parrot and six gerbils died due to the abuse they suffered. "We’re relieved that the animals will not be returned to their abuser," said Aurélie, manager of the SPA in Essuiles.
A conviction and a lifelong ban
This Wednesday, Redouane G., 23, was found guilty of multiple charges including willful abandonment of a domestic animal and illegal possession of a Category 1 attack dog without a permit, vaccination, or insurance. Already in custody for an unrelated offense, he refused to appear in court.
The court sentenced him to:
- A €3,000 fine
- A lifetime ban on animal ownership
- Confiscation of all animals
- €14,284 in compensation to the SPA for veterinary and care costs
The judge followed the prosecutor’s recommendations closely. The SPA’s lawyer, Murielle Simon, said justice was served — but nothing could undo the suffering endured by the animals.
