Shelter Saves Abandoned Dog Left Tied to Pole in Freezing Virginia Weather
Richmond Animal Care and Control (RACC) has rescued a black male pit bull mix left tied to a bus pole in dangerously cold temperatures on January 16, 2025. The dog, abandoned near the intersection of Chambers Street and Bowen Street in Richmond's Southside, was exposed to freezing temperatures, with lows reaching 13 degrees Fahrenheit.

To the person who left their dog tied to the bus line pole in the freezing cold last night: Do better. 🤬," RACC posted on Facebook.
The rescue came after a concerned citizen alerted authorities, highlighting the importance of community action in preventing animal neglect.
Recovery and Investigation
Since his rescue, the dog is reportedly "doing great," according to RACC spokesperson Christie Chipps-Peters. The shelter is actively investigating the case, as abandoning an animal is a Class 1 misdemeanor under Virginia law.
A Broader Issue of Animal Abandonment
Chipps-Peters has long urged pet owners to seek alternatives to abandonment. "The shelter should be your absolute last resort. It's stressful, we euthanize, we don't want your pet there," she explained in a previous interview.
Instead of abandoning animals, owners are encouraged to:
- Reach out to no-kill rescues.
- Find help through family, friends, or community networks.
A Season of Challenges
The Richmond dog is not the only case of abandonment in extreme weather this winter.
- Kansas City, Missouri: KC Pet Project rescued a dog left in a cage during a blizzard.
- Old Bridge, New Jersey: A 2-year-old Bichon Frisé was found in a dumpster by maintenance workers.
These cases underscore the importance of responsible pet ownership and community vigilance.
