Obélix the Pony, Rescued From Abuse, Dies After Finally Finding Safety

Pulled from a nightmare of cruelty by animal rescue groups, Obélix the pony passed away despite emergency surgery. His story has shaken a community and reignited the fight against animal abuse.

A heartbreaking end despite every effort

On May 1, 2025, the tearful head of the animal sanctuary Les 3 Dindes announced devastating news: Obélix, the abused pony rescued just days earlier, died during treatment. After undergoing surgery to save him from horrific injuries, his body gave up — just when he was finally safe.

A body too damaged to recover

Obélix was rescued on April 23 from a property in the Var region, in critical condition: one eye destroyed, his body covered in wounds, barely able to stand. He was rushed to the Clinique du Cheval de Grenade in southwest France. While his surgery on April 28 brought hope, his condition deteriorated two days later. “It often happens with animals who’ve suffered too much,” said the rescue. “Once they feel safe, their bodies let go.”

The violence he endured was beyond neglect

The pony’s injuries were reportedly caused by dogs belonging to his owner — a woman claiming to run an animal protection organization. “The photos said it all. This wasn’t neglect. It was extreme violence,” said Lisa Fernandez of Les 3 Dindes. The animal’s removal was so tense that it required police intervention.

“She will pay dearly for this”

Lisa Fernandez didn’t hide her anger. “I guarantee she will pay dearly,” she promised. Legal action is underway. French law punishes animal abuse with up to 3 years in prison and a €45,000 fine. Obélix’s case is now a symbol in the ongoing battle for justice.

At least he died loved

Though cruelly short, Obélix’s final days were filled with warmth, care, and compassion. “He left this world surrounded by love,” Lisa said in a tearful message. “We wanted him to live. But at least he didn’t die alone, in pain, and forgotten.”
