Mourning Woman Fosters a Dog and Finds Healing in an Unexpected Friendship

Losing a beloved pet can feel like losing a part of oneself. For Erin Yarbrough, a law student in West Los Angeles, the sudden passing of her 4-year-old dog, Sonny, left a void that seemed insurmountable. "He was such a special light in a world that is often quite dark," Erin shared. "He was my waking up. He was my going to bed."

As Erin mourned the loss of Sonny, she felt an unshakable call to honor his memory by helping other animals in need. "I think he was telling me to give what he gave to me—love, joy, and comfort," she said

A Chance Encounter with Sid

Searching online for dogs in need of foster care, Erin found solace in scrolling through profiles of animals awaiting love. One dog caught her attention: a large pup named Sid at the Best Friends Lifesaving Center in West Los Angeles.

"He was described as ‘extra-large and looking for a foster home,’" Erin recalled. Intrigued, she and her partner, Stephen, visited the rescue center, where Sid immediately stole her heart. "He was just sitting there wagging his tail with these beautiful yellow-brown eyes," Erin said. "I knew he needed me as much as I needed him."

From Shelter to Home

Sid quickly settled into his new foster home. "He’s very confident and curious. He explored the house, wagged his tail, and even snuggled on the couch within hours," Erin shared. The couple renamed him Spud, a name that perfectly matched his playful and endearing personality.

Spud’s joyful spirit brought warmth and comfort to Erin during her grief. "He’s his own dog, very much his own dog," Erin said. "It’s clear he’s not Sonny, and I would never expect him to be, but he’s helping heal my heart in his own way."

Spud the dog is so happy now.

A Healing Bond

Spud’s playful antics have provided Erin with moments of lightness during her mourning. "When I’m crying, he interrupts me with a big rope toy or waddles over with something else," Erin said. "He’s so happy and joyful, and it’s good to have that joyous spirit around."

Though Spud’s history is largely unknown, Erin knows his future is filled with love. While Spud’s foster status remains, Erin is leaning toward making the arrangement permanent. "The Best Friends staff told me to take my time, but I would say he’s home for good," she said.

A Story of Hope and Healing

Erin’s story is a testament to the healing power of fostering. Through opening her heart to Spud, she has found comfort and purpose in helping another being in need. "It’s good to be doing something for someone else who needs it," Erin said. "Spud has brought love and life back into my home."
