Man Caught Beating His Dog in the Street Thanks to Video Filmed From a Train

In Catalonia, Spain, a 28-year-old man faces up to 18 months in prison after a passenger filmed him violently abusing his Belgian Malinois from a train. The disturbing footage led to his swift identification, arrest, and the rescue of the dog.

Abuse Caught on Camera

The shocking incident occurred in early August in the town of Calaf, northeast of Barcelona. On August 3, a passenger at the train station recorded disturbing scenes: a man repeatedly hitting his Malinois with his hand, leash, and even his foot. The video shows the dog being yanked up violently several times while lying on the ground, clearly in distress.

The footage, shared with local authorities, quickly became key evidence in identifying the suspect, as reported by the Diari de Tarragona.

Swift Police Action

A specialized unit of the Guardia Civil launched an investigation immediately after receiving the video. Within days, on August 6, they located and identified the suspect. The man was questioned on August 8 and now faces potential charges that could result in up to 18 months in prison, a significant fine, and a ban on owning any pets in the future.

Authorities also discovered the Malinois was not microchipped and had no official identification documents, a violation of Spanish pet ownership laws.

Dog Rescued and in Care

The abused dog was seized from the owner and placed in the care of an animal shelter. There, he is receiving medical attention, behavioral support, and rehabilitation after the trauma.

Animal welfare groups in Catalonia have praised the quick public response and the use of citizen-recorded evidence to hold abusers accountable.

Growing Crackdown on Animal Abuse in Spain

This case highlights Spain’s tightening stance on animal cruelty, with harsher penalties introduced in recent years. Under current legislation, intentional abuse that causes injury to an animal can result in prison time, and cases like this are increasingly pursued in court.

For many in the animal welfare community, the Calaf case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and public intervention.
