Man Arrested in Menorca for Throwing His Partner's Dog Out the Window

A 51-year-old man has been arrested in Ciutadella, Menorca, after allegedly throwing his partner's dog out of a window, causing the animal’s death. The suspect, who has prior records for domestic violence and animal abuse, also physically assaulted his partner during the incident.

Violent Outburst Ends in Tragedy

According to police reports, the attack began with verbal abuse before escalating to physical aggression. The man reportedly grabbed the woman by the neck and pushed her before throwing the dog out of the window. The victim, fearing for her safety, sought refuge in a nearby shop while desperately trying to save the injured animal, but it was too late.

Legal Consequences and Growing Concern

Spain’s legal framework now recognizes animal abuse as an aggravating factor in domestic violence cases. Under the latest amendments to the Penal Code, harming a pet to intimidate or psychologically abuse a partner is considered a criminal offense. Authorities stress that such acts are often indicative of deeper patterns of control and violence within abusive relationships.

Rising Cases of Gender-Based Violence

This case adds to growing concerns about domestic violence in Spain. In 2025 alone, two women have already lost their lives to their partners or ex-partners. Since official records began in 2003, 1,296 women have been murdered due to gender-based violence.

Support and Resources for Victims

Victims of domestic violence and those witnessing abuse can seek help through Spain’s 016 helpline, which operates 24/7 in 53 languages. The service does not leave traces on phone bills, but users should manually delete call records. Additional support is available through the ANAR Foundation (900 20 20 10) for minors and the ALERTCOPS app, which allows users to send emergency alerts with geolocation directly to law enforcement.
