Italian Doctor Under Investigation for Performing a CT Scan on His Injured Cat

An Italian doctor is facing an internal investigation after using hospital equipment to perform a CT scan and emergency procedure on his injured cat.

The Incident That Sparked Controversy

According to Italian media, radiologist Gianluca Fanelli brought his two-year-old cat, Athena, to the Umberto Parini Hospital in Aosta after she fell from a six-story building last month. Desperate to save her life, he decided to intervene using medical resources available at his workplace.

"She was between life and death," Fanelli wrote in a letter addressed to the hospital. "I knew that only quick action could save her."

Unorthodox Medical Intervention

Fanelli performed a CT scan on Athena before conducting a procedure to drain fluid from her lungs, a crucial step in stabilizing her breathing.

"If I hadn't done everything in my power and she had died, I would never have forgiven myself, especially knowing how much my children adore her," he explained.

Hospital Launches Internal Investigation

Massimo Uberti, the hospital director, stated that the case has been referred to the Aosta prosecutor's office.

"The story was so unbelievable that at first, I thought it was a joke," Uberti told Italian news agency ANSA. "Unfortunately, it's not, and we are now investigating all possible violations."

Prosecutors are reportedly considering charges against Fanelli for misusing public resources and depriving human patients of essential medical services.

Ethical Dilemma: Personal Conviction vs. Professional Boundaries

In his letter, Fanelli defended his actions, noting that he used the scanner during off-hours when the equipment was not in use for scheduled procedures.

"I regret if this led to any rule violations," he wrote, adding that he was willing to reimburse the hospital if necessary.

His wife, Nicoletta Spelgatti, a senator for the far-right Lega party, strongly defended his actions.

"In life, you do what is right without worrying about the consequences," she stated. "My husband saved a life, and that’s all that matters."
