A Rescue in Extreme Conditions
On Saturday, October 4, 2025, firefighters in the commune of Le Russey (Doubs, France) were called to a horrifying scene. A two-year-old horse had been found at the bottom of a five-meter-deep pit, its legs bound tightly.
The rescue operation took nearly two hours, with crews battling difficult weather and treacherous terrain. Severely weakened and suffering from hypothermia, the horse was taken into veterinary care. Sadly, despite all efforts, its condition deteriorated, and the animal was euthanized on Sunday, October 5.

Owner Questioned by Authorities
The horse’s owner was identified and placed in police custody on Monday, October 6, at the Morteau gendarmerie. After 24 hours of questioning, he was released the following morning. Prosecutors have not yet confirmed whether legal proceedings will be pursued. The results of the veterinary investigation will help determine the next steps.
Associations Demand Justice
The case has sparked outrage among animal rights groups. The association Stéphane Lamart “For the Defense of Animal Rights” filed a formal complaint for “acts of cruelty toward a domestic animal.”
Its founder described the situation as an “act of absolute barbarity” and called for the courts to deliver the harshest possible sanctions. He also pointed out a troubling possibility sometimes seen in the equestrian world: animals deliberately injured or killed for insurance payouts. While not accusing the owner directly, he insisted that full transparency and answers are needed.
A Call for Stronger Protections
This tragedy has reignited debates in France over animal cruelty laws and the need for tougher enforcement. For animal welfare advocates, the fate of this horse is yet another reminder that legal consequences must reflect the seriousness of such acts.
