Cosmo’s Fight for Life: Beaten, Broken, but Not Defeated

Left with multiple fractures and an unthinkable trauma, Cosmo the stray dog is now fighting for a second chance at life thanks to a small rescue in Mexico that's risking everything to save him.

A rescue born from violence

On April 28, the Fundación Toby responded to a desperate call from residents of Tlalmanalco, in the State of Mexico. What they found was horrifying: a large stray dog, later named Cosmo, had been brutally kicked—his hip and legs shattered. He couldn’t move. He couldn’t escape. He had been left to die.

“He was literally in three pieces”

Samia Klimos, the founder of the shelter, initially hesitated to intervene. The foundation was already overwhelmed and deep in debt. But one look at Cosmo changed everything. “Literally, he was in three pieces,” she said. Cosmo was rushed to the Centro Veterinario de Especialidades de Tepepan, where X-rays confirmed multiple fractures: femur and hip—injuries that would require at least three expensive orthopedic surgeries.

The price of compassion

The first procedure alone cost 30,000 pesos. And that’s just the beginning. Fundación Toby is struggling with more than 200,000 pesos in existing debts from caring for over 150 dogs. Despite that, they chose to save Cosmo. “He’s a life. He’s in pain. And we can’t turn away,” said Samia.

From aggression to hope

At first, Cosmo growled and bit. His fear was understandable—he had been beaten and discarded like trash. But slowly, he began to trust. “He bites less now. He’s learning that not all humans hurt,” said Samia. The foundation named him Cosmo after Carl Sagan, seeing in him something vast and beautiful, even in his brokenness.

A campaign for survival

To cover Cosmo’s surgeries and help the other 150 animals in their care, Fundación Toby launched a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of 250,000 pesos. As of now, just 42 donations have come in. “We need help—not just for Cosmo, but for every animal we save,” pleaded Samia. Daily updates, receipts, and vet reports are posted on their Instagram (@FundacionToby) for full transparency.
