A Dog Lost for 5 Years Reunites with His Owner Thanks to a Fraternity House

In an extraordinary twist of fate, a missing Yorkshire Terrier named Kingston was found lounging outside a Mississippi fraternity house — five years and 250 miles away from home.

An Unexpected Discovery at a Fraternity House

When Neal Rachal, president of Kappa Sigma at the University of Southern Mississippi, stepped outside the fraternity house, he didn’t expect to find a small Yorkie in a red shirt hiding behind some wood. Thinking the dog belonged to a neighbor, Rachal took a picture and circulated it, but no one came forward.

The brothers decided to take the little dog in, affectionately naming him "Benji" and making him an honorary brother for the week.

A Bond Forms Between a Fraternity and a Lost Dog

Benji quickly became part of fraternity life, attending intramural softball games, joining grocery trips, and enjoying barbecue feasts. He even received a symbolic initiation into the brotherhood, complete with a formal bid and card celebrating his "Kappa Sigma values."

He slept in Rachal’s bed, played on the fraternity’s volleyball court, and was showered with love and attention by 54 brothers.

A Painful Past: Kingston's Long Journey

Kingston had disappeared from his home in Lake Charles, Louisiana, in 2020, following the devastation of Hurricane Laura. Despite desperate efforts from his owners, Debbie and Joseph LaFleur, to find him, months turned into years, and hope seemed lost — especially after Joseph’s sudden passing in 2022.

Kingston was more than just a pet; he had been Joseph’s closest companion, sharing chicken nuggets, vanilla ice cream, and even a personalized Dallas Cowboys jersey.

The Emotional Reunion

On April 4, Debbie and her son Jared drove four hours to meet the dog they never thought they would see again. When Debbie called his name, Kingston's ears perked up, and he sprinted toward her, covering her with kisses.

Fraternity members were sad to say goodbye, but they celebrated the incredible reunion, knowing they had played a special part in Kingston’s journey home.

A New Chapter for Kingston and Debbie

Although no one knows exactly where Kingston spent his missing years, he was healthy and spirited when found. He has since settled back into Debbie’s home, sleeping in her room and waiting faithfully by the door.

For Debbie, Kingston’s return has been a healing miracle, giving her back a small but precious connection to her late husband.
