This Stealthy Opossum Managed To Convince A Grandma That He Was A Stray Kitten

ADVERTISING

Eric Hertlein's grandmother has been feeding stray cats and kittens for years. The kind-hearted woman from Kansas has set up a little area on her enclosed porch with warm beds, food and water, and she sometimes even lets some of the felines in the house.

Eric was very used to seeing the happy kitties when he visited his grandma, but last time he noticed something unusual about one of them. Among the cats lying in beds and lounging in the warmth was a very comfy looking opossum!

Eric of course was rather surprised and asked his grandma about the sneaky impostor, assuming he'd gotten in by accident, attracted by the free food and warmth. But to his amazement, his grandma replied that this was a cat she'd been feeding for months and even named Tete!

Of course, Tete was anything but a cat, something that Eric was all too happy to point out. He told The Dodo:

I laughed for a good five minutes. She didn’t realize what I was laughing about until I started pointing out the pointy nose and skinny tail. She didn't realize he wasn't a cat.

Once she'd recovered from the shock of her mistake and examined the 'kitten' she'd been caring for, Eric's grandma had only one thing to say:

She kinda just sat there. Then she got a little closer … and slowly looked up at me with the biggest grin on her face and said, 'Well, he hasn’t bothered me yet, so I’m OK with him being here!'

So Tete is welcome to stay in his home – as long as he behaves himself! Opossums can be aggressive, do not make good pets and should not be encouraged to stay in your home, but you can remove them safely with the help of a wildlife rehabilitator.
