On November 2, a Chihuahua cross was abandoned on a doorstep in Cambridge, England, as she was giving birth to a litter of puppies. Despite the people who found her acting as quickly as they possibly could to get the dog and one of her puppies to a vet, the newborn did not survive.
The dog, named Bella, had to have a cesarean to deliver her remaining puppies after enduring temperatures as low as 1°C as she'd given birth to the first one. Joshua Flanagan, a volunteer with Fenland Animal Rescue, the group who rescued her, told Metro:
She was in all this pain and discomfort, howling at the top of her lungs when we found her after we were called by police. It was 1C (34F) outside when we turned up and she was in a wire crate. We see abandoned animals and strays on a weekly basis, but it’s the first time we’ve seen an animal dumped when they’re in so much need. This is a case that has shocked us all.
Although one of the puppies died, the 2 others are getting on well, as is their mom. Joshua continued:
The person who dumped her would have known exactly what was going on. They must have thought ‘I don’t want that vet bill, I can’t afford that’ and then left the crate on the doorstep of a well-off family who could sort it out. We need to find whoever did this so the RSPCA or police can speak to them. Had she not been found, she most certainly would not have survived.
An investigation has been launched to find Bella's former family. In the meantime, the little dog is staying with her rescuers, safe and warm with her new family.
