The “Saddest Dog In The World” Was Just Abandoned Again, Now She Risks Euthanasia

Last year, the heart-wrenching photo of Lana went viral and gave her the tragic nickname of “the saddest dog in the world.” In October 2015, this gorgeous six-month-old pup was rejected by her adoptive family and taken back to the shelter where she grew up.

Lana reacted very badly to her abandonment and the volunteers from Rescue Dog Match said she came back completely deflated.

Considering her painful past, it's no surprise that Lana became so depressed. The puppy was saved from a breeding farm in Mexico where she had to battle with twelve other puppies just to get food. Traumatized, she had a lot of difficulties trusting both humans and dogs again.

She found it extremely hard to adapt to her new life in the shelter and would occasionally lash out and act aggressively out of fear.

She was repatriated to Canada, and in the space of only a few months, the canine had been passed on from foster family to foster family. In each new home, when Lana felt vulnerable, she would growl at her adoptive family who would then return her to the shelter, worried that the unpredictable puppy would attack.

In February 2016, the association Rescue Dog Match seemed to have some good news and it looked like Lana had finally found her forever home, where she would get all the love and care she needed.

Her adoptive parents posted numerous photos with their new canine companion online and the new family seemed to be very happy together.

However, last week, Rescue Dog Match shared a message on Facebook, explaining that Lana was once again looking for a home. "Please help find her a foster or forever home. Lana only has until May 20th."

The association explained that the dog had been returned to the shelter in July 2016, only six months after her adoption seemed to be going well. Lana was transferred to another shelter in October 2016 and then moved on to another foster family who sadly returned her to the shelter for the third time in November 2016.

The shelter has been trying since November to find the animal a loving family, but to no avail. As there are always new animals arriving, the team finds itself in an impossible situation. They announced that they can only keep the dog until May 20.

Brenda Dobranski, the founder of Rescue Dog Match, explains to The Dodo:

I am not sure what will happen to Lana on [May 20]. Unfortunately, euthanasia is an option, but with all the time and support and money that has been offered to Lana I don't even want to think about it.

Brenda Dobranski emphasizes that the perfect environment for Lana would be a farm, where the canine could spend most of her time outside. She continues:

Lana's adoption did not work out because people want a dog they can pet and play with. Lana is a silly fun girl but she is not the type of dog that will let you give belly rubs to and sleep in bed with. She loves to have a job.

If you live in Canada or the USA and think that you could offer Lana the home that she so desperately needs, send a message to info@rescuedogsmatch.com.

Tens of thousands of dogs and cats end up in shelters each year, either due to neglect, abuse or abandonment. Consider adopting before you shop, and visit your local shelters before going to a breeder. Every dog and cat deserves a fair chance at a forever home.

If you live in England, you can visit the RSPCA, and if you live in the United States, you can visit the ASPCA to get more information about pets available for adoption.
