Orphaned Raccoon Is Raised By Dogs… And Ends Up Becoming One Too

Last year in the Bahamas, Rosie Kemp found a baby raccoon who had fallen from a tree. Injured and starving, the tiny thing had lost his family.

So Rosie decided to take him back to hers and nurse him back to health. She named him "Pumpkin" and fed him from a baby bottle.

Rosie Kemp told The Dodo :

Raising her was (and still is) a full-time job. They are so unbelievably intelligent, very aware, and I would say they are even able to express emotions.

Soon, Pumpkin found her strength, her broken back legs were healed and she now had a jolly spring in her step.

But the best thing about it was that she had two friendly dogs in her new home! Pumpkin became very close with them, and very soon they were inseparable.

She instantly bonded with us and our two rescue dogs and follows me and our two dogs everywhere we go.

Perhaps from spending a bit too much time with her canine friends, Pumpkin now thinks she is a dog. She now behaves just like them and loves following them around everywhere.

Rosie's daughter, Laura Young, described their relationship:

[Pumpkin] now thinks she is a dog … she is able to play and be rough with them and she respects them when they have had enough.

Sometimes, Pumpkin leaves her canine buddies for a bit to go have some fun in the pool.

But she never goes for long without them…

Because what she really loves is cuddles on the sofa.

This incredible story should not make us forget that raccoons are wild animals.

Their home is not in a house with humans. Laura Young has since posted this message:

Raccoons are NOT pets. They are wild animals, so they are quite moody.

But even so, Pumpkin had lost everything. And without Rosie's help, she would have never survived. So on this exceptional occasion, Pumpkin is definitely a very lucky raccoon.
