Phoenix's Miraculous Recovery: From Freezing to a New Life

Phoenix, a 10-month-old lab mix, narrowly escaped death after being found nearly frozen in Erie, Pennsylvania. Thanks to the ANNA Shelter’s dedication and her new owner’s care, she’s on her way to a full recovery and a life filled with love.

The Dramatic Rescue

Phoenix was discovered on January 6, lying motionless in a driveway. Initially believed to be dead, she showed signs of life when Ruth Thompson, the ANNA Shelter’s executive director, heard her faintly moan. The shelter team worked tirelessly to revive and warm the dog, bringing her back from the brink.

"It was amazing to see her come back to life,"

said her soon-to-be owner, a 65-year-old Erie resident who wishes to remain anonymous. He first encountered Phoenix’s story on the ANNA Shelter’s Facebook page and felt an immediate connection.

A Perfect Match

When the man visited the shelter, he initially looked at another dog, only to find it had already been adopted. That’s when Thompson introduced him to Phoenix.

"She was wagging her tail and licking people," he recalled. "As soon as I saw her, I knew I had to take care of her."

Thompson agreed they were a perfect fit: "The fact that he’s home all the time is exactly what Phoenix needs."

Phoenix's Road to Recovery

Phoenix’s recovery has been remarkable. Currently under a foster-to-adopt arrangement due to her fragile health, she is on a specialized diet of four meals a day to help her regain weight. As of January 12, she weighed 26 pounds, and her new owner plans to monitor her progress every three days.

Despite her challenging past, Phoenix has adapted well to her new routine. Her owner, a retired man, provides constant companionship. He’s eagerly awaiting spring so Phoenix can explore his two-acre, fenced yard with a creek.

"It’s like a dog paradise," he said. "I can’t wait for her to experience being a dog."

Gratitude for the ANNA Shelter

The new owner credits the ANNA Shelter, particularly employee Riley, for Phoenix’s survival. Riley stayed by Phoenix’s side through her first night, offering warmth and comfort.

"She deserves a lot of credit for this dog wanting to survive," he said.

Phoenix’s Growing Fanbase

To keep the community updated, the new owner created a Facebook page for Phoenix, which has already amassed over 1,200 followers. Supporters from across the United States follow her journey, amazed by her resilience and progress.

"People are just praying she continues to thrive," said the owner.
