When moving to a new city, the last thing on most people's mind is how dog-friendly their new home is. But thanks to one website, dog-lovers in the U.S. can now see which places treat their pooches the best.
Alencorp.com recently released a study which ranked the top 10 dog-friendly cities, based on canine-specific legislation, the number of no-kill shelters, the number of dog parks and how many businesses, such as restaurants and shops, allow dogs in them.
Out of the 10, Austin, Texas came out on top. According to the Alencorp website, the city has:
167 restaurants, 15 dog parks, five hiking trails, three tours, and seven pet-friendly stores that welcome dogs [which] provide a lot of options for visitors and residents to bring their dogs along most places they go.
To come up with their rankings, they looked through breed-specific legislation, which bans certain breeds from being owned, makes owners pay a fine if they have one and sometimes means that dogs such as Pit Bulls have to be put down if they are reported.
Each city on the list has no bans on any breed.
Here is how the cities were ranked:
1. Austin, Texas
2. Phoenix, Arizona
3. New York, New York
4. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
5. Boston, Massachusetts
6. Arlington, Virginia
7. Minneapolis, Minnesota
8. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
9. Hoboken, New Jersey
10. New Haven, Connecticut
If you are moving to a new state, make sure that your canine companion will be welcome in your new home by researching state and local laws online.
