A great many British troops owe their lives to this German Shepherd, who was accompanying them on a mission.
Without the dog, who was reportedly trained by the American army, the situation would have taken a tragic turn for the worst for the soldiers.
Last month, the SAS (British Special Air Service) were coming back from a 10-day mission in northern Iraq, where they are helping the Peshmergas near the Kurdish border. The convoy of four vehicles was attacked by a group of Islamic State soldiers.
A handmade bomb hit one of their vehicles, forcing the unit to abandon the mission and take cover. At which point about fifty heavily-armed members of Daesh ambushed the Brits, reports the Daily Star.
With the Jihadists mounted on trucks and armed with machine guns, the commandos were facing certain death. They separated into three groups to take shelter.
It was at this moment that one of them was attacked from behind. In this desperate situation, one of the soldiers, of American origin, unleashed his German Shepherd on the Jihadists. They tried to stop the dog by firing at him, to no success.
An anonymous source told the Daily Star:
The dog could sense the tension and had an overpowering urge to protect its handler and the other troops. When the dog was unleashed it went after the greatest threat without consideration for its own safety.
The German Shepherd pounced violently on two of the attackers, biting them around their faces and neck. The attackers fled the scene, running to escape the powerful dog.
Though the SAS have used military attack dogs on missions for a long time, this is the first time that one of them has acted alone to save the lives of the soldiers. We can rest easy knowing that the dog also got out unscathed and with no injuries!
