Man Arrested After Abandoning Puppy at Airport When Denied Boarding

Abandoned in a Parking Lot

The incident took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, at Hercílio Luz International Airport in Florianópolis, Brazil. Security cameras captured the man leaving a small transport crate containing a puppy between two parked cars before returning to the terminal to catch his flight.

The passenger was headed first to Brasília, where he planned to connect to a flight to Manaus. Meanwhile, airport staff discovered the distressed animal and quickly alerted the authorities.

Police Intervention and Arrest

The case was taken up by the Civil Police of Santa Catarina and the Federal Police, who coordinated with the Department of Animal Protection. By the time the man’s plane landed in Brasília, officers boarded the aircraft and arrested him on suspicion of animal cruelty.

During questioning, the man confessed, claiming he had sold his family’s belongings to return to Manaus and decided to abandon the puppy after being denied boarding with the animal.

Puppy Safe—and a New Home

Despite the ordeal, the puppy was reported to be in good health. Police confirmed that the young dog has now found a new home after being adopted by an airport employee. The adoption sparked relief and joy among animal lovers following the case.

Brazilian law treats animal cruelty as a serious crime, punishable by up to five years in prison, fines, and a ban on owning animals.

Public Outrage Over Animal Cruelty

The case has reignited debate in Brazil over the treatment of animals, particularly in situations where owners are traveling. Social media users expressed fury at the abandonment, calling it “heartless” and “unforgivable,” while praising the quick actions of airport staff and authorities.

Animal protection groups emphasized that there are always alternatives to abandonment, from temporary foster care to specialized travel solutions, and that no situation justifies leaving an animal to suffer.
