Unable to Fly, Dog Drowned

According to local media WKMG, airport employees alerted authorities after discovering the lifeless body of the dog. The event dates back to December 16, 2024, when Orlando police responded to the scene inside a women's restroom located just before the security checkpoints.

The woman reportedly decided to dispose of her dog after realizing she lacked the necessary documents for the animal to travel with her, either in the cabin or the cargo hold. Faced with potentially missing her flight, she allegedly opted to drown her pet.

Calls for Stricter Animal Cruelty Laws

"We were horrified to learn that a woman drowned her pet because she could not board an airplane," stated the Animal Rights Foundation of Florida. Initially detained on animal cruelty charges, the suspect was released after posting a $5,000 bail. She is expected to appear in court soon.

This incident has renewed discussions around the penalties for animal cruelty. Florida State Senator Tom Leek cited this case to advocate for his bill aimed at intensifying punishments for cruelty acts. "This is another horrific example of why I introduced Senate Bill 502," he stated.

In response, Orlando International Airport officials reminded travelers about the proper procedures and requirements when traveling with pets.
