Rome, the City of Cats: Record Number of Feline Colonies as the Capital Seeks to Protect Them

Ahead of National Cat Day on February 17, the city administration has approved a measure aimed at enhancing and preserving these colonies. The initiative includes funding of approximately 150,000 euros to provide shelters, food, and medical care for the cats.

Recognizing the Work of Colony Guardians

In addition to protecting the cats, the initiative seeks to recognize the dedication of colony guardians. These volunteers invest time and money to ensure the well-being of stray felines. "Rome is the European capital with the most extensive feline colonies. It is essential to support those who care for them," said Rocco Ferraro, a member of the Gualtieri Civic List.

Ferraro proposed creating official identification for colony guardians and their equipment, featuring the logo of Rome’s municipal government. This initiative, in collaboration with schools, aims to provide full institutional recognition to those who contribute daily to the welfare of the city’s feline population.

Celebrating National Cat Day

To further emphasize the importance of feline welfare, Rome will host a public event on February 17 at the Atlantico venue. Organized by the Metropolitan City, the event will feature adoption opportunities and various activities to raise awareness about responsible cat care.

"With this measure, we not only protect feline colonies, but we also acknowledge the vital role of volunteers who dedicate themselves to these animals every day," Ferraro stated.
