Man Dies After Trying to Save Dog From Ocean at San Francisco Beach

A Heroic Attempt Ends in Tragedy

On the afternoon of May 8, a man entered the frigid waters off San Francisco’s Ocean Beach near Lawton Street in an attempt to rescue a struggling dog. Witnesses reported seeing the man fully clothed as he plunged into the waves.

For reasons still unclear, the man collapsed shortly after entering the water.

Bystanders Rush to Help

Two women nearby bravely entered the surf and pulled the man back to shore. They immediately began CPR and called 911. San Francisco Fire Department’s ocean rescue team arrived within two minutes, and paramedics were on scene shortly after to initiate advanced life support.

Despite their rapid and courageous response, the man was pronounced dead later at a local hospital.

The Dog Survived

In a twist of fate, the dog that prompted the rescue made it back to shore on its own and survived the incident.

A Somber Reminder

The San Francisco Fire Department issued a statement urging the public not to enter dangerous surf conditions—even to rescue pets—but instead to call 911 and wait for trained professionals.

“This is an unfortunate reminder not to enter the water for humans or pets but rather, to call 911,” they wrote.
