58 Neglected Animals Rescued by SPA Volunteers in Brittany

A Large-Scale Animal Rescue

On Wednesday, August 20, 2025, volunteers from the SPA (Société Protectrice des Animaux) in Côtes-d’Armor intervened in a case of serious neglect. At a private home near Paimpol, they discovered six dogs, around twenty chickens, several rabbits, fifteen cats, and a dozen birds—a total of 58 animals suffering from various forms of mistreatment.

According to Manon Trézéguet of the SPA refuge in La Roche-Jaudy, the scene was grim: “All were malnourished and dehydrated, some bore untreated wounds or traces of blows. They lived in unsanitary conditions, deprived of food, care, and forced to remain in their own excrement.”

From Signal to Action

The rescue operation followed a report received a week earlier. Sadly, this was not the first time the same family had been flagged. “Back in March, we had already carried out animal seizures at this home,” Trézéguet explained. The repetition highlights a worrying pattern of neglect that demanded decisive intervention.

Authorities and the SPA stress that vigilance from neighbors and citizens is vital: without reports, many cases of hidden abuse would never come to light.

Safe Haven at the Refuge

The animals are now under the care of the SPA refuge of Leydour in La Roche-Jaudy, where volunteers and veterinarians are working tirelessly to rehabilitate them. Treatments include rehydration, proper nutrition, and medical care for untreated injuries.

The shelter, already at capacity, relies heavily on donations and community solidarity to manage such large-scale rescues. Volunteers have stepped up, and local support has been strong, but the financial and emotional toll remains significant.

A Call for Awareness

Cases like this highlight the ongoing struggle against animal neglect in France. The SPA urges the public never to hesitate to report suspicious situations. Early intervention can prevent suffering and save lives.

As for the 58 rescued animals, their recovery will take time, but for the first time in months—perhaps years—they are finally safe.
