Paco, a two-and-a-half-year-old Argentine Mastiff, saved by firefighters in Pavillons-sous-Bois, France (northeast of Paris), while he was in agony in an illegally rented storage box, had to be euthanized.
During the night of May 7, a neighbor noticed a dog in distress in the garage. He immediately contacted the fire department who came in the middle of the night to rescue Paco. Severely injured, he was not for one moment agressive or threatening, and seemed to put his fate in the hands of the rescuers.
Sadly, the first hospital visit proved to be complicated. He was starving, dehydrated and incapable of going to the bathroom by himself. In addition, all of his paws were broken, and he had open wounds which had become infected, as well as burnt paw pads.
Paco had probably been beaten with several object before being left to die in the storage box. Unfortunately, his state hadn't improved in the hours that followed. Exams confirmed that he was in critical condition, and he risked sepsis.
Running out of options to help Paco, whose pain was only slightly improved with the morphine he received, the volunteers decided to end his suffering, and with heavy hearts, they planned for his euthanasia the next day.
On Wednesday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m., Paco was put down with his rescuers by his side, surrounded by love and treats. Meanwhile, anger was growing with neighbors and volunteers, shocked by so much violence against such a sweet and affectionate dog.
While a car accident is a possible cause of his injuries, it's not an accepted one by many. An online petition, already signed by 80,000 people, was launched to demand justice and charge the person responsible. To add your signature, you can, click here (in French).
