After Hurricane Maria, which hit the island in September 2017, many animals were left without a home. With so much to do, the residents found it very difficult to look after them.
That's why charity Lucky Dog Animal Rescue decided to come to the rescue and help the large number of homeless dogs and cats. Once they arrive in the US, they will be put up for adoption.
This rescue, as FOX 32 Chicago reports, took months of coordination. To have so many four legged animals on a plane doesn't happen every day.
Mirah Horowitz, founder and head of Lucky Dog, has expressed her gratitude to the airline, without whom none of this would have been possible:
We are incredibly grateful to Southwest for partnering with us to make this flight a reality. This flight will literally save lives — both of the animals who are transported to D.C. as well as to those who remain on the island and need the supplies we are bringing.
Not only as this flight allowed the many homeless cats and dogs to be rescued, but it has also allowed over 6500 kilos of supplies to be brought to the people of San Juan.
All of this has been made possible thanks to Lucky Dog and also the Puerto Rico Animals charity and the Friendship Hospital for Animals in Washington, both of whom have worked together to make this project a reality.

Sonia Collazo, who works for the federal government said "you cannot forget the dogs. When you forget the dogs, you forget what a good life means".
