New York City has joined the likes of Los Angeles and Madrid in banning circus acts using wild animals thanks to a 43 to 6 city council vote.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, who has supported other animal protection movements, including that to ban horse and carriage rides, has stated that he looks forward to signing the bill into law.

Councilwoman Rosie Mendez, who has been fighting for this for 11 years now, said in a statement:

This legislation will ensure that animals are in their natural state, not confined in small boxcars and/or treated in other inhumane ways. Equally important, human beings will be safe from animals that may act ferociously.

This bill is one of many changes towards cruelty free entertainment. Although Ringling Brothers, one of the largest and most well-known circuses, shut down a few months ago, many smaller circuses are still carrying on.

In addition to just a city ban, Andrew Cuomo, the governor of New York state, is expected to sign a bill to prohibit the use of elephants statewide.

More and more cities and states are starting to see the cruelty that often leads up to these spectacles, and animal lovers can only hope that these trends continue, so that we can leave wild animal circuses in the past.

If you would like to contribute to helping circus animals escape this life of misery, you can donate to organizations like Performing Animal Welfare Society, who work to offer exploited, wild animals better living conditions.
