In January 2025, a foul odor led a building concierge in Mulhouse to discover a horrifying scene: Stark, a four-year-old Malinois, was found in a basement, emaciated, dehydrated, and with severe burns covering much of his body. Mathieu Spenlé, director of the Mulhouse SPA, recounted the moment: "The dog wasn't moving at all. We immediately questioned whether he was still alive." Stark was so weakened that he could barely lift his head as rescuers rushed him to veterinary care.

Further investigation revealed a disturbing history of abuse. In August 2024, the same owner had confined a previous dog, Riley, in a car trunk under the scorching sun, claiming the dog was aggressive. Despite this incident, he acquired Stark in November, describing him as "a playful dog, a sweetheart." Tragically, Stark's fate was even more dire.

A Grim Pattern of Abuse

The owner's explanation for Stark's injuries was both shocking and implausible. He admitted to tying Stark's leash to his car to "walk" him, stating, "The dog didn't want to get into the car; he wanted to continue his walk. I drove off slowly with the leash, and the dog ran behind." However, neighbors reported witnessing the car accelerating and braking abruptly, suggesting Stark was dragged. Text messages sent by the owner to a friend further incriminated him: "The dog is dying; we should throw him into the canal."

Upon arrival at the SPA, Stark's condition necessitated the amputation of his most severely injured leg to prevent sepsis. Remarkably, within a week, Stark was adapting to life on three legs, displaying an incredible will to live.

On June 3, 2025, the former owner appeared before the Mulhouse Correctional Court, facing charges of "serious abuse and acts of cruelty." The prosecutor requested a two-year prison sentence, with one year suspended under probation and one year of non-negotiable incarceration. Additionally, the prosecution sought to ban the defendant from owning animals or working in any animal-related profession. The verdict is scheduled for June 20.

Attorney Christophe Gérard, representing the Mulhouse SPA, the Stéphane Lamart Association, and Act for Animals, emphasized the broader implications: "Animal abuse is a daily violence. This isn't an isolated case." He expressed satisfaction that the public prosecutor recognized the severity of the offenses but lamented France's lag in animal protection compared to countries like Belgium, where such rights are enshrined in the constitution.
